On weekday nights and weekends, the trendy streets of Ximending are where Taipei’s young, hip crowds gather. Offering an eclectic mix of urban pop culture, Ximen is known for being an area that is lively and full of energy. On any given day, visitors can expect to find at least some sort of concert, exhibit, or special event. That is why Ximen is a popular youth hangout in Taipei. There’s always something happening in Ximending!

Observers in Ximending

Luckily, Ximen did not disappoint for our October Reach To Teach Taiwan event. We led a small gathering of newly arrived teachers through the busy pedestrian streets of Ximen, where we witnessed  shoppers and food vendors en masse, street artisans, and a group of high school students giving a live guitar performance.

We spent some time wandering around Ximen’s Graffiti Alley, which never fails to deliver incredible street art and at least a photographer or two in the midst of a modeling shoot. We stumbled upon a dance show, and then we ran into an official autograph signing session with South Korea’s popular boy band, Super Junior! All in all, it was a great walk, and I think everyone was suitably impressed with Ximen’s kitshy restaurants and glowing neon lights.

After our walk, we retreated to the patio behind the Red Mansion, where we dined on cheap Thai food and ice-cold Singha beer.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the event and we hope to see you next month!
