RTT Monthly Event South Korea: Masai Barefoot Marathon Update!

Masai Marathon, South Korea

The morning of May 15th dawned bright and early. It was the perfect day for a marathon! Our group of Reach To Teach teachers set off for Mt. Gyejoksan, Daejeon to join in the Eco-healing Sunyang Masai Marathon, a barefoot running event that attracts hundreds of participants each year.

The day started with a riveting percussion performance to kick of the festivities. After that, we listened to a short presentation from Eco-healing, the organization that is responsible for the event.

Then, we headed off to the race. Each participant had a choice of completing either the seven kilometer walk or a 13 kilometer run. The trail had been nicely groomed with a soft red clay surface to walk or run on barefoot, so our fears of stepping on twigs, rocks and leaves were quickly alleviated. About halfway up the seven kilometer trail, we were treated to a clay foot bath and a field where we could sit and catch our breath. We were treated to some complimentary soju and lunch at the end of the race.

I would like to say thanks to Reach To Teach teachers Jorelle, Vanessa, David, and Anthony, who came out to show support.

The Masai Barefoot Marathon was an incredible experience and we all shared a great sense of accomplishment once the day was done. Don’t miss out on the event next year and keep an eye out for next month’s Reach To Teach monthly event!
