Today, Al Ain is the second largest city in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the fourth largest city in the United Arab Emirates. Following its independence in 1971 Al Ain became more of a unique location and has only continued to grow. There has been a huge push towards promoting tourism for this city, which is evident today.

Al Ain, also known as the Garden City as a result of its plush green landscape, has a long history. It has been inhabited for over 4,000 years, which is evident in various archaeological sites that once housed predecessors who enjoyed the many oases that can still be found here today. Various forts were even built in the late 19th and 20th centuries to guard these oases.

Al Ain is located just East of the city of Abu Dhabi in the Eastern region of Abu Dhabi Emirate just south of Dubai. Surrounding Al Ain is Dubai, Oman, Sharjah, and Saudi Arabia. Al Ain is a very picturesque city surrounded by mountains and red shaded sand dunes.

Typical Job Duties of an ESL Teacher in Al Ain

As you teach English abroad in Al Ain, your ESL job duties will include the following:

  1. Up to 30 teaching hours per week
  2. 50-55 minute classes
  3. Teacher training is also provided and your school will have materials for use during ESL lesson preparation
  4. Teach a range of subjects including English, Math, Science, Art, Music, ICT, PE and English Social Studies.
  5. Kindergarten through grade five teachers needed

Weather

In Al Ain you will find that the weather is a hot desert climate with a variance of temperature from 13°C to 44°C. The warm season lasts from May 5 to September 25 with an average daily high temperature above 40°C. The hottest day of the year is generally in early August, with an average high of 44°C and low of 31°C.

The cold season lasts from December 3 to February 21 with an average daily high temperature below 28°C. The coldest day of the year is generally in late January
with an average low of 13°Cand high of 24°C.

In terms of humidity the average relative humidity is 60%. There tends to be low humidity in Al Ain, especially in the summer months, which makes it a very popular tourist destination at this time of year.

Tourism and Recreation

Due to the unique dry desert air in Al Ain, this is a very popular destination for the surrounding coastal cities to come and visit, as the humidity in these areas can be un-desirable. Due to this steady flow of tourists, Al Ain has become and is still growing as a good tourist spot. So what is there to do?

Museums

There are several museums in which to visit including the Al Ain National Museum which is the oldest in the United Arab Emirates. It holds two main sections regarding ethnographic and archeological features of the country.

There is also the Al Ain Palace Museum which is actually located within the palace of the former United Arab Emirates president, Sheikh Zayed Sultan Al Nahyan. The museum is designed to give the public a real taste of what the palace is like.

Al Ain Zoo

White Tiger (Al-ain Zoo)

Al Ain hosts its own zoo. The zoo was built in 1969 and covers 990 acres of land. Here you can find many animals including the almost extinct white lion. There is a very big cat house to visit as well as a dinosaur trail which includes mechanical moving dinosaurs.

To make it around all of the zoo and see all of the animals you should give yourself at least two hours. There is also an open train which can take you around the zoo, however it does avoid the yellow section which houses many interesting animals, such as the Bengal tiger, leopards and crocodiles, so you may want to jump off to see these.

Wadi Adventure

For those of you that are looking for a little more adventure, check out Wadi Adventure. It makes for an excellent day trip. Wadi Adventure is a water park designed towards extreme water sorts, including three white water rafting streams, a surf pool complete with real beach to relax upon, a kayaking station, plus a climbing wall and zip line station. This truly is a great day out for you and your friends when you are after a little downtime that involves some adventure.

Jebel Hafeet

Hot springs at Green Mubazarrah

Jebel Hafeet mountain rises 1249 meters above Al Ain and touches upon the borders of Oman. At the foothills of this glorious mountain lies a flow of hot spring water forming a lake in an area called Green Mubazarrah, and as a result many swimming pools and jacuzzis are spread out around the area for the public to enjoy.
