If any one word best describes the generation of modern Koreans, it’s trendsetters. Seriously, I’ve yet to see another country so amazingly on point with their fashion game. Each season, Korea brings fresh new trends and revamps old ones with an almost unbelievable amount of originality.

It’s an exciting time to be style obsessed and living in Korea because the possibilities for mixing creativity into your wardrobe are endless. At the moment, there are currently 5 trends dominating the streets and runways of Korea, and they’re both extremely easy to emulate and perfect for summer 2014.

1. Statement Shoes

Forget statement necklaces this summer. Korea is all about statement shoes – think sky high heels in bright neon colors or over the top intricate strappy heels. Because these shoes make such a huge splash in your outfit, it’s best to keep the rest of your pieces simple. During the day most Korean women wear statement shoes with jeans and a cute print top (Bart Simpson printed tops are still very much the rage in South Korea) and minimalist accessories. To take these killer shoes into your wild nights on the town, loose fit dresses are perfect to ward off heat and show off your cute shoes!

2. Overalls

Denim overalls are being sported everywhere on 20-something year old girls. The cute staple we wore as children is now back and somehow possibly even more fun and adorable to wear as an adult. To keep the outfit cute without going overboard, wear a word print tank top beneath your overalls for a fun play on our childhood outfit.

3. Mixing Edgy + Girly Pieces

This look is so popular there’s an entire pinterest page dedicated to casting a spotlight on it. The idea of a sexy, sophisticated woman who refuses to give up her pearls or aviators is the driving force behind this chic look. Think of a modern day Audrey Hepburn. Take her LBD and pearls, add a pair of killer statement shoes, a sleek clutch, and a pair of Ray Bans and you’re rocking that fine balance of edgy+girly. Don’t forget to pull your hair up into a sleek chignon to finish!

4. “Loose Fit”

Gone are the days of tight little barely-there mini dresses and daisy dukes. In place of skin tight sun dresses and outfits, Korea is going for a more relaxed look this summer with a trend called “loose fit”. Wide leg trousers and oversized dresses and shirts have made their way back onto the streets of Korea. Personally, I think this trend is the biggest hit. I especially love the look of loose fit printed trousers pair with a neutral colored strappy statement shoe. It’s so refreshingly sexy and cool; a huge leap away from the cutesy outfits usually seen in Korea.

5. Chunky Sandals

Birkenstock style chunky sandals are huge in Korea this summer. Most girls love to slip these on to rock with their summer dresses or denim shorts for their daytime outfits. These heavy sandals have a slight twist on the old masculine ones. We’re seeing them in a variety of colors with fun thick heels and even in platforms. You can find your own pair of chunky sandals on eBay.
